An defense minister has stated that the MoD is currently investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, and staff have been told to avoid talking about classified matters in any vehicles.
Safety Advice for Defence Staff
During a recent interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss secret information while riding in China-made cars.
He said that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, but emphasised that security is a concern in every modern cars.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a secret classification in any vehicle, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in all automobile, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.
When it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, Pollard replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Broader Defence Context
The revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow China to disable public transport and bring disruption to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
The wider security situation underscores the importance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of official activities, from transport use to discussions habits.
