The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
