Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. Lula was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the protesters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.
